This information is directed at United States Citizens.  A Visa is a permission slip to enter a particular country.  For US Citizens, many countries are “visa waivered” and some countries require an entry visa.  Visas can range from the easy Australian ETA that costs $20 and is done online to the Chinese or Russian visa applications that run multiple pages with detailed questions.  The USA charges some of the highest entry visa rates in the world so some countries charge us more than citizens of other countries.  Visa rules do occasionally change based on world conditions and sometimes based on your mode of entry air versus cruise ship, etc.  First you have to have a passport book from the US Government that has at least a few empty pages.  Most governments require you to have six months validity on the date that your trip ends so renew your passport early.  You apply for your visa from a foreign government embassy and usually send your passport so they can actually glue your visa into your passport for entry into their country.  Most of the time, you have to apply either six or three months prior to travel.  When you get to the border, the first thing the customs person will do is examine your passport for a visa. Some world cruises or other complicated travel itineraries might require multiple visas from different countries.  The visa work for a trip can be quite complicated and sometimes expensive.   Any type of trip that might require a visa is a candidate for travel agent assistance.  We will always advise you if a visa is required.  The visa work has to be right as you can be denied boarding and lose your prepayments if you don’t have the required visas.  We can also help with the process if you need assistance (fees apply). Visa services exist that can help process a visa and even expedite the process for a fee.  They are usually located near embassy’s in DC so they send people to the embassy to actually “walk” the visa through the process.  Depending on the product or country, we sometimes use the preferred company as most of the fees are the same on top of consulate fees.  You can check out the free link to Visa HQ to see if you need a visa. If you are in the Tampa Bay area and you are thinking about travel that requires a visa, call our travel agency as we can help with the process and have done it before.
